So - What’s Happened to Persuade Me?

Estimating has never been my strong point, as my family knows only too well. If they ask when tea’s going to be ready, I fob them off with a vague, hopeful-sounding ‘6-ish’ and feel very proud when I get something on the table by 7!

It’s been a bit like that with Persuade Me, plus there were other factors.

First, I’d already written a modern version and that lulled me into a false sense of security. When I went to look at it, however, I realised my writing had changed so much that it was easier to start from scratch. And, when I got down to it, a different telling of the same story emerged …

Second, the great reviews of The Importance of Being Emma from Jane Austen groups were a huge boost to my confidence - and also made me want to take the utmost care with Persuade Me. If I’ve learnt anything from my book signings and talks to date, it’s that Persuasion is many readers’ favourite Austen novel, second only to - you’ve guessed it - Pride and Prejudice. No pressure, then!

Third, I completely underestimated the impact on my time of a full-time job, family life, promoting The Importance of Being Emma and various other commitments. I’m the first to admit I’m not Superwoman!

I hope in the end you’ll think it’s been worth it. In the meantime, I’m enjoying the company of Dr Rick Wentworth, Anna Elliot and Sir Walter Elliot, 8th Baronet, far more than is good for me!
