If JA were ever to write paranormal romance, which at this stage looks highly unlikely, she could do worse than start with Sense and Sensibility and that classic shape-shifter, Edward Ferrars.
Deep down, he’s never anything other than a fudge - yes, it’s ‘F’ for ‘Fudge’ as well as ’Ferrars’, Mrs Jennings. At first sight, he’s a perfect square in a top quality covering of 70% cocoa solids. As time goes by, however, he looks increasingly inferior and distinctly flaky.
But all’s well that ends well. He turns out to be a good egg after all - the chocolate sort, naturally.
And he’s always more appealing than his brother Robert, slimy lime cordial in a sickly white chocolate veneer, and sister Fanny, a hard toffee with a very bitter aftertaste…
But not quite as delicious as Colonel Brandon, vintage brandy hidden within a dark mysterious coating.
And what’s the verdict on Willoughby - delectable cream caramel at heart, or hollow shell?
